Charities and causes to support

I’ve concentrated here on charities which have the most effect relative to the amount of money given to them, based on work by Giving What We Can and others. Here are some causes to donate to or support with your work:

Cool Earth – working with rainforest communities to reduce deforestation

Rainforest Coalition – assisting tropical governments, communities and peoples to responsibly manage their rainforests

Climate Emergency Fund – supporting climate-related action worldwide

Trillion Trees – a joint venture between Birdlife International, Wildlife Conservation Society and WWF, helping protect and restore forests to achieve one trillion trees by 2050, for the benefit of people, nature and a stable climate

Union of Concerned Scientists – researching, fighting misinformation and communicating with the public and governments on climate change

You could also support your country’s Green Party politically or with a donation – click here for a full list.

Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace International – using non-violent creative action to pave the way towards a greener, more peaceful world, and to confront the systems that threaten our environment.

Offsetting carbon footprints for your choir or organisation

Offsetting is not a cure for climate change. It only helps to treat the symptoms – the best solution is to avoid the emissions in the first place. But if you are in a situation where emissions are unavoidable and want to purchase offsets, these organisations are doing good work:

Tradewater – removing high-impact gases such as CFCs from circulation. Purchase carbon offset credits.

BURN – providing clean cooking stoves for rural households in sub-Saharan Africa. Purchase carbon offset credits.

Check your carbon footprint using the UN Carbon Footprint Calculator.
